Chapbooks

A chapbook is a small hand-bound booklet commonly used to present a portfolio of writing, such as poems and short stories or even a collection of recipes. Chapbooks originated in 16th Century Europe and traditionally held verses, ballads, nursery rhymes, children’s stories, and other tales springing from folklore. They got their name from the peddlers and merchants who sold them, called “chapmen”. Today the chapbook concept offers diverse opportunities for both personal and corporate promotion.

The booklets, usually containing 32 pages, are relatively easy to make, and while there are a variety of ways to design, bind and cover them, the simplest and cheapest can be done with just folded paper, stapled spine and card stock covers.

A chapbook usually measures 6" x 9", although they can be made up in just about any size no smaller than 5" x 5"; booklets can contain from 8 to 40 pages, with a stapled spine. These publications range from low-cost productions to finely produced, hand-made editions, which may be perfect bound.

The traditional chapbook has been revitalized due to digital printing that makes it possible to produce any quantity as required quickly and economically. The chapbook is ideal to publish short collections of poetry, event advertising, products, services, short-short fiction, book trailers, and company history and product portfolio. Originally, chapbooks had no cover, but nowadays, most include a cover of heavy cardstock.
