Feb 23, 2004

Dear patrons, teachers and practitioners of literature New Contrast is pleased to announce the creation of the Marion Dixon Prize for fiction, a one-off award for 2004. The prize of R1000 will go to the best piece of fiction to appear in New Contrast this year by an author previously unpublished in the journal, and will be adjudicated by an independent panel of writers. To encourage local authors, only citizens of African countries will be eligible for entry. The prize will be awarded in March 2005. I would greatly appreciate it if you would pass this information on to your students, colleagues or anyone else who might be interested. I would also like to use this opportunity to draw your attention to a new website, hosted by UCT's Centre for Creative Writing, that will be publishing new poetry, fiction and non-fiction throughout the rest of the year. To see more, please go to www.uct.ac.za/depts/ccw Yours sincerely Tom Eaton Associate Editor, New Contrast

STYLE: "Poor writing style, like bad manners, makes someone appear less intelligent than they are. Writing style, like manners, can be learned in many ways. Reading and writing a lot is the first step. Having people critique your writing is probably the next best thing. There are many basic writing mistakes that people make, which can easily be avoided by being aware of them. [link]

Article in the Washington Times today that takes a look at blogging from its effect on writing standpoint.

White House 'Rush to War' was 'Reckless,' Argues New Book (OneWorld.net) OneWorld.net - WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan 14 (CSM) -- It's the latest in a string of books, reports and articles that call into question the way the Bush administration presented pre-war evidence about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Kenneth Pollack, a Clinton-era National Security Council member and strong supporter of regime change in Iraq (Mr. Pollack had presented his arguments in the much talked about book "The Threatening Storm: The Case for Invading Iraq") now says that he and many others were wrong about the nature of the threat Iraq posed.

Online tools for studying history
