Dear patrons, teachers and practitioners of literature New Contrast is pleased to announce the creation of the Marion Dixon Prize for fiction, a one-off award for 2004. The prize of R1000 will go to the best piece of fiction to appear in New Contrast this year by an author previously unpublished in the journal, and will be adjudicated by an independent panel of writers. To encourage local authors, only citizens of African countries will be eligible for entry. The prize will be awarded in March 2005. I would greatly appreciate it if you would pass this information on to your students, colleagues or anyone else who might be interested. I would also like to use this opportunity to draw your attention to a new website, hosted by UCT's Centre for Creative Writing, that will be publishing new poetry, fiction and non-fiction throughout the rest of the year. Reading and writing a lot is the first step. Having people critique your writing is probably the next best thing.
